Federal Changes To School Meals

School meals are changing: Here’s what you should know

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently set new standards for school meals. The purpose of the new standards is to help children eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

The first phase of the new standards were completed last year with changes to school lunch menus. The second phase begins this year and impacts breakfast menus.

Some of the new requirements include:
  • increasing the amount of fruits
  • increasing whole grains
  • We will offer fruits, grain/breads and milk daily.
  • Students will be required to have 1/2 cup of fruit on their tray for it to count as a full meal.
