Aldar Academy

Aldar Academy has a time-honored WorkAbility program consisting of both classroom and on-site job experiential components. Our school-wide team consisting of our WorkAbility Coordinator, Instructional Staff, and Mental Health Staff prepare students for vocational opportunities through a wide range of educational curriculum, on-site training, Community Based Instructional Outings, and internships. During the course of the school year each student develops a Portfolio that contains: Identification Documents, Employment Information, and Certifications.

Our students are provided with the opportunity, skills, knowledge and experience required to succeed in a work place setting. Our WorkAbility Program has been approved by the State Department of Education, and is designed to help our students find their passion, calling, and enable them with the power to provide value in their community and families.

Transition Services

To ensure that students acquire the skills necessary for succeeding in their new environments after graduation, Aldar Academy staff work with Alta Regional Centers and school districts to help students make the transition into other programs such as public schools, adult service programs, independent living arrangements and group homes. Aldar Academy works with students and their families to identify and choose appropriate programs.

Vocational Education

The Vocational Education Program provides pre-employment training to all of our students and work experience (California Department of Education – WorkAbility 1 Program) for students from ages 14 to 22, regardless of their specific level of capability. As a vital part of the Aldar Academy curriculum, Vocational Education provides a positive, encouraging, and highly structured program affording students with opportunities to learn valuable work and life skills.

Coaching for Success

Students work closely with a Job Coach on a new job. Their Job Coach trains them at the job-site, oftentimes working alongside the student with "hands-on" demonstrations. Once the student begins to learn the job, their Job Coach creates a plan to fade out in order to allow students the opportunity to master skills and problem solve on their own.

Career Development & Capability

To ensure a greater level of success on the job, we strive to match the right position with the skills of a particular student. We offer volunteer positions on campus in addition to off-campus work.

Skills for Specific Social Situations

Vocational Education gives students opportunities to develop core job skills that will help them interact with the typical workforce; develop social skills; learn independent living skills and simultaneously raise awareness of how people with disabilities can thrive in a work environment.

The following is a list of things each WorkAbility student will participate in:

1. Career assessment and planning

2. Application process (filling out, turning in, etc.)

3. Resume writing

4. Professional Presentation (on the job skills)

5. Landscaping skills

6. Warehousing skills

7. Culinary Arts

8. Interview techniques (appropriate dress, mock interviews, etc.)

9. Computer Certifications
